The Academy Awards program on Sunday was the most-watched in five years, drawing 41.3 million total viewers, according to Nielsen. But advertisers, for the most part, failed to roll out the red carpet for new ads, choosing instead to air previously-viewed spots.

Better than Expected

The 41.3 million viewers was 5 million more than last year, according to Media Life. In 18-49s, the show averaged a 13.1 rating for ABC, 8% more than last year.

Other award shows, including the Emmys, Golden Globes and Grammys, were also up over last year.

Two years ago, the Academy Awards hit an all-time low in terms of viewership. The Academy was worried about low viewership numbers, which prompted it to nominate 10 films rather than its usual 5 for Best Picture.

Recycled Ads

Though ABC had an easier time selling Academy Award ad slots than some expected, and was able to demand a higher price than last year, few advertisers spent the additional money to create special ads just for the Oscars, choosing instead to air spots that had been seen in other venues, reports The New York Times. Both McDonald’s spots had been seen before, as had one from Intel, one for Windows 7 from Microsoft, and a spot for Zyrtec Liquid Gels from Johnson & Johnson.

"It's already starting because we've had a fairly warm, wet winter," allergist George Makol said. "We're already seeing spring trees, such as ash, cedar and juniper come in late January and early February."

The allergy season usually doesn't start until later in March, Makol said. Tucson has averaged 9.13 inches of rain annually in the last decade, so 4 inches so early in the year has caused allergy-causing plants to bloom early.

Makol, a doctor at Alvernon Allergy and Asthma, said wind-pollinated plants such as trees cause more allergy problems than insect-pollinated wildflowers, which aren't as much of an allergy threat. He added that he's had a full slate of patients seeking allergy relief for the past two weeks.

Chief culprits

Along with spring trees he mentioned above, these are the chief plants that cause allergies in Southern Arizona, according to Makol: mulberry, olive, palo verde and mesquite trees; and ragweed and rabbitbrush.
