Preview: Community Shield, Sounders vs. Timbers - Sounder At Heart

Today's Inaugural Community Shield match ensures that the Seattle-Portland rivalry will continue its 35-year run in which the two teams played every season they both fielded teams. The rivalry has stretched across three leagues.

Although it's being billed as a friendly, the 13,000-plus fans who will be in attendance may not feel the same way. The two teams have met 60 times, with the Sounders holding a 34-21-5 advantage, including wins in each of the past two meetings.

There are reportedly four busloads of Timbers fans making the trip to Seattle. The game will kick off at 6 p.m. with plenty of tickets still available. Proceeds from ticket sales will go to the  There are stil 21 Senior players listed on the Sounders' roster and, if as expected, the roster limit is 20 that means at least one player won't be making the active roster (and that doesn't include Blaise Nkufo, who will join the team after the World Cup).  This listing also does not include David Estrada and the battle for the four Developmental Slots

I am still trying to believe this will be resolved. A strike would be a disaster for the players and the league. I have my season tickets all ready to go again this season, I’m waiting to watch my team.

However I will pass blame…I think the players for the most part are being too demanding and want too much this early on. I really hope the mediator is able to do something, and the union/MLS can work their way towards what the rest of the leagues can offer. Baby steps.

I also find it ridiculous that the league is (more likely than not) forcing teams trade the out of contract veteran players. and having other teams sign them just to benefit their position. Just recently Adrian Serioux and Kevin Hartman just got traded? why now? and for 2nd and 3rd round draft picks for two years from now and next year respectively? really? Something seems fishy with those trades….

I’ll say the players do need to be willing to accept a bit less than their asking for. At the same time the MLS is reluctant to compromise at all really. You can’t really say what they’ve given is really compromising because they were most likely willing to give that stuff anyways. I can agree that there really is no side to blame exclusively. Both sides are being extremely unreasonable and are very much to blame for anything negative that happens.

Study Proves that Dean Ornish Cardiac Rehabilitation Program Has ...

PR Newswire — March 12, 2010

PITTSBURGH, March 12 /PRNewswire/ — A study released this month in the American Journal of Health Promotion demonstrated that significant improvements in cardiac health have been achieved by Highmark members participating in the Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease, a one-year intensive cardiac rehabilitation program. The study was conducted by Highmark and the Preventive Medicine Research Institute, a nonprofit research institute founded by Dr. Dean Ornish.

Ornish program participants showed statistically significant improvements in body mass index, triglyceride levels, cholesterol levels, blood pressure and more. The program also proved to be practical and sustainable for members as 88 percent of participants remained in the program after 12 weeks, and 78 percent of participants completed the program.

“Coronary artery disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and costs more than $100 billion to treat annually,” said Dr. Donald Fischer, senior vice president and chief medical officer at Highmark Inc. “This study demonstrates that the Ornish program has improved the health status and quality of life for our members in the program.”

In 1997, Highmark became the first insurer in the country to provide and pay for the Dr. Dean Ornish Program for Reversing Heart Disease, which is a non-invasive treatment option that combines four components to slow, stop and even reverse the progression of coronary artery disease. This option includes stress management, moderate exercise, group support and a low-fat, whole-foods nutrition plan.

“As health care costs for coronary artery disease patients continue to escalate, lifestyle-based preventive interventions such as the Ornish program demonstrate success and offer a less-invasive, more cost-effective and sustainable solution than conventional cardiac surgery for some people,” said Fischer.

Frost & Sullivan Lauds Positron Corporation for Cardiac-Focused PET Molecular ...

. -- Based on its recent analysis of the cardiac molecular imaging systems market, Frost & Sullivan recognizes Positron Corporation with the 2010 North American Award for New Product Innovation, for its pioneering cardiac positron emission tomography (PET) scanner, Attrius(TM). The Attrius(TM) was developed and optimized for molecular imaging of the heart, making it the ideal solution for cardiologists and hospitals looking to add high accuracy, cost effective imaging technology.

The nuclear cardiology imaging scene has been dominated by single photon emission tomography (SPECT) until recently when the imaging world was flipped upside down by the announcement of SPECT reimbursement cuts by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), combined with the world shortage of the molybdenum-99 isotope. Many in the industry are looking for new technologies to improve their diagnostic accuracy, improve patient outcomes, reduce patient radiation exposure all while adding to their bottom line. The elusive solution to this dire situation may lie in an already well established, underutilized imaging modality: PET.

The policies, which will be administered by Regence Blue Cross Blue Shield, are geared toward people with one of seven chronic conditions: asthma, congestive heart failure, diabetes, depression, heart disease, chronic bronchitis and emphysema. Such people would save money by getting doctor visits and prescription medication related to their condition at little or no cost. They also would have regular co-pays of between $10 and $20 for routine doctor visits, with an annual deductible of $250. Hospital care would cost a patient 20 percent of the total bill, with an annual cap set at $1,500 for individuals and $3,000 for families.

However, should these folks ever need a knee replacement hysterectomy or other treatment or test that has been deemed "overused," such as cardiac bypass surgery, high-tech-imaging exams and emergency room visits, they would pay twice the amount of a normal co-pay, twice their normal annual deductible, and up to half the cost for a hospital or ER visit, with the caps remaining the same.

A Lawman, Polite and Ready to Shoot

The series, which will have its premiere on FX on Tuesday, grew out of an Elmore Leonard short story, “Fire in the Hole” and situates Givens in Kentucky, where he grew up and vowed never to return.

“Justified” is hardly the first attempt to render the dialogue of Mr. Leonard, the author of dozens of novels over the last half-century, suitable for the small screen. But while some of the films made from his novels — “Out of Sight,” “Get Shorty” and “Jackie Brown” — have found critical and commercial success, the medium of television has not always been so kind to the Leonard oeuvre. Network efforts like “Karen Cisco’ and “Maximum Bob” tanked, in part because Mr. Leonard’s characters tend to do and say things that don’t fly with network standards. On FX, thanks to basic cable’s less restrictive policies, the people in “Justified” cuss and sleep around, the former stripper really does have a heart of gold, and the neo-Nazi is charming and loquacious.
