Rare trees in Encinitas: Last week, the San
Diego Botanic Garden transplanted four rare, endangered boojum
plants from the San Diego Zoo's Wild Animal Park in San Pasqual
Valley. The animal park has the largest population of these plants
outside of their native range in the Sonoran desert of Baja
California, but wanted to transfer some to other locations to help
the species proliferate. The 10-foot-tall plants were brought in by
tractor-trailer last week and installed in the Hamilton Children's
Garden. The boojums are extremely slow-growing succulents related
to ocotillos.
Plant a Flower Day: Carlsbad Village is
inviting volunteers to Plant a Flower Day at noon Friday, starting
at the Farmers Market shed, 2930 Roosevelt St. Volunteers will be
planting spring flowers around downtown Carlsbad; call

A2SO presents: “American Celebration”
The Ann Arbor Symphony Orchestra continues its 2009-2010 season with their “American Celebration” on Saturday, March 13th in the Michigan Theater at 8 pm. This concert will feature world-class pianist Arkadiy Figlin.
The A2SO begins on the West Coast of the United States with a piece as exciting as the race horse it is named for, Seattle Slew: Three Dances in Forequarter Time. Written by the world prize winning and recently retired U of M professor of composition William Bolcom. Seattle Slew will take you on a wild ride through three different movements with surprises around every corner. Seattle Slew, Bolcom’s 3rd symphony, was influenced by two unrelated sources: a horse and a dance-step.
“Seattle Slew” was a racing horse who won the Kentucky Derby in 1977 and the Triple Crown weeks later. Bolcom combined the character of the successful racehorse with a dance-step that dates back to the 1830s, called the “Slew Step.” The characteristics of the dance that are used in the orchestral piece are that of dramatic changes in both the tempo and overall sound, creating three exciting movements of varying moods.
