From Tennessee we go now to Canada on the continuing topic of equally shared parenting.  In both the state and the nation, there are bills pending before the legislatures that would establish the presumption of equally shared parenting.  And in both, the presumption could be rebutted by a showing that one parent was violent or otherwise unfit.  And both bills have substantial backing and momentum, although their ultimate fate remains unknown.

But what a difference a thousand miles or so can make!  This article on shared parenting actually deals honestly with some of the issues involved, particularly the issue of domestic violence ( The London Free Press , 3/10/10).

(As a brief aside, let me point out that the entire debate about equally shared parenting sometimes seems like nothing more than a debate about domestic violence.  In that way, the anti-dad crowd has successfully highjacked the terms of the discussion.  And that's a shame since actual incidents of physically harmful DV are fairly rare.  As but one example, about three months ago, the government of Scotland published its most recent findings on DV in that country.  It found that about 5% of men and 5% of women in intimate relationships had experienced some form of DV in the previous year.  Seventy-nine percent of those had suffered no injury whatsoever or simply a "minor cut or bruise.")

If the article is any indication, people in Canada and specifically in Ontario, are starting to take seriously the many ways in which allegations of domestic violence can be used as a weapon in child custody matters.  In fact, the London Equal Parenting Committee is sponsoring a talk by former MP Roger Gallaway about that very topic.  The article quotes Gallaway as follows:

"What I find distressing is the lack of objectivity around this whole subject," says Gallaway, who represented his riding for the Liberal party from 1993 to 2006. "There has to be some type of balance put into the discussion. And it's sadly lacking."

How Viagra Commemorated Its 11th Birthday | Business Pundit

FrederickSamuel , where this picture is from, says:

When Pifzer wanted to mark Viagra’s 11th birthday, they wanted to do it in typical, tongue-in-cheek Viagra style. A party blower (featuring a Viagra pill pattern) was created to hand out to internal sales teams. The message on the piece encouraged the sales teams to ‘Celebrate Viagra’s 11th birthday’.

Blog At War recently interviewed Felix Kuehn and Alex Strick van Linschoten, editors of My Life with the Taliban , the autobiography of Abdul Salam Zaeef, a former senior member of Afghanistan’s Taliban and a principal actor in its domestic and foreign affairs.

In the interview, Kuehn and van Linschoten discuss the recent history of Afghanistan, Zaeef’s decision to join the Taliban, and Al Qaeda’s role in Afghanistan. The editors were also asked about Zaeef’s time in Guantánamo:

Q. Do you think that Guantánamo was the ultimate trauma of Zaeef’s life, as the book seems to suggest? Worse than what he experienced in war?

Felix: I don’t know. His entire life has been a trauma. I think Guantánamo probably transcends his personal experience. It’s a prism that shapes how he views foreign governments, how he views the United States, how he views foreign military organizations. The deceit, the dishonesty, the talk about democracy and human rights, and then experiencing the complete opposite. But beyond that, I think it’s a collective experience in a way, because it resonates within Afghan society.

Review: 'Our Family Wedding' is one celebration moviegoers should skip

All you need to know about Our Family Wedding is that the happy ending comes courtesy of a goat overdosed on Viagra, humping Forest Whitaker.

Movies like this are where Oscar winning careers go to die.

Our Family Wedding should embarrass Whitaker and each of his co-stars, perhaps except Carlos Mencia, whose chief attribute as an actor is that he's a so-so standup comedian. They play the fathers of an interracial couple in love, and have no love lost between them.

The rift is painfully laid out when flashy radio host Brad Boyd (Whitaker) gets his illegally parked sports car towed by garage owner Miguel Ramirez (Mencia). An argument rapidly sinks to bigoted insults. Neither man knows their children (America Ferrera, Lance Gross) are planning to marry. Hilarity is intended to ensue.

Before you can say Guess Who's Going Out to Dinner , the families meet at a fancy restaurant and yell a lot. Then they gather for brunch and yell some more. The goat is supposed to be part of the reception dinner. Food brings out the worst in these characters who in turn bring out the worst in the actors playing them.

Courts stands up against 'Viagra ruling'

FURNITURE retailer Courts Jamaica Limited has filed an appeal against the multi-million- dollar award to a 26-year-old man it had previously agreed to supply with what amounts to a lifetime supply of Viagra, following an accident that left him impotent.

Courts is finding it hard to swallow the Supreme Court's decision to award Kenroy Biggs $18 million for pain and suffering and wants the Court of Appeal to shrink the sum by $8 million.

Overall, the furniture retailer is to shell out to Kenroy Biggs $45.85 million in damages -- which includes the contested $18 million -- plus legal costs.

The company had agreed to foot the Viagra cost for Biggs to the tune of $1.53 million, a figure that had been affirmed by Justice Bryan Sykes in a ruling late January.
